Last Day of the Year...

THE LAST DAY OF THE YEAR

An indulgence of 7 years is granted to all the faithful with the last contrite heart, during the last half hour of the year and the first half hour of the following year, shall pray to the Most Holy Trinity in thanksgiving for benefits received; beseeching the same Holy Trinity for peace among Christians nations, for concord among Christians princes, for the conversion of sinners, and for the triumph of holy Mother Church and its visible head, the Roman Pontiff.

ACTS OF THANKSGIVING TO THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

We offer to the Most Holy Trinity the merits of Jesus Christ in thanksgiving for the Precious Blood which He shed in the Garden for us; and by His merits we beseech the divine majesty to grant us the pardon of all our sins.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc.

We offer to the Most Holy Trinity the merits of Jesus Christ, in thanksgiving for His most precious death endured on the cross for us; and by His merits we beseech the divine majesty to free us from the punishment due to our sins.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc.

We offer to the Most Holy Trinity the merits of Jesus Christ, in thanksgiving for His unspeakable charity, by which He descended from heaven to earth to take upon Himself our flesh, and to suffer and die for us on the cross; and by His merits we beseech the divine majesty to bring our souls to the glory of heaven after our death.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc.

(Indulgence of 100 days each time.- PIUS IX. June 18, 1876)

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, behold us prostrate in Thy divine presence. We humble ourselves profoundly and beg of Thee pardon for our sins. We adore Thee, omnipotent Father, and with the outpouring of our hearts we thank Thee for having given us Thy divine Son Jesus to be our Redeemer, and for having left Him with us to the consummation of the world in the most august Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, in which mystery of faith and love He reveals to us the wonders of His Sacred Heart.

(Please say one Glory Be to the Father, etc.)

O Divine Word, most adorable Jesus, our Redeemer, we adore Thee in Thy Sacrament, and with the outpouring of our hearts we thank Thee for having taken human flesh and for having made Thyself, for our redemption, both Priest and Victim in the sacrifice of the Cross, a sacrifice which, by an excess of the love of Thy adorable Sacred Heart, Thou dost renew every moment on our altars throughout the world. O Supreme Priest, O divine Victim, grant us the grace to honor Thy holy sacrifice in the most adorable Eucharist with the homage of Mary most holy and of all Thy Holy Church, triumphant, suffering and warfare. We offer ourselves wholly to Thee, and since Thou dost deign to have victims associated with Thee, accept our offering, and, uniting it with Thine, bless us.

(Say one Glory Be to the Father, etc.)

O Divine Spirit the Paraclete, we adore Thee and with the outpourings of our hearts we give Thee thanks that Thou hast, with such great love for us, wrought the ineffable blessings of the Incarnation of the Word of God, a blessing which is being continually extended and enlarged in the most august Sacrament of the Eucharist. Ah, by this adorable mystery of love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, do Thou grant unto us and all poor sinners Thy holy grace. Pour forth Thy holy gifts upon us and upon all redeemed souls, and in an especial manner upon Holy Church, the spouse of Jesus Christ and our mother, upon its visible head, the supreme Roman Pontiff, upon all Cardinals, Bishops and Pastors of souls, upon Priests and all other ministers of Thy sanctuary. Amen.

(Glory Be to the Father, etc.)

An indulgence of 3 years (S. C. Ind., Mar. 22, 1905; S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1932). Raccolta No. 45

ACT OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE BLESSSINGS OF THE PAST YEAR

O God, the beginning and the end of all things, Who art always the selfsame, and Whose years fail not, we now, at the close of another year, kneel in adoration before Thee, and offer Thee our deepest gratitude for the fatherly care with which Thou has watched over us during the past, for the many times Thou hast shielded us from evils of soul and body, and for the numberless blessings, both temporal and spiritual, which Thou hast showered upon us. May it please Thee to accept the homage of our grateful hearts which we offer Thee in union with the infinite thanksgiving of Thy divine Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, Who with Thee liveth and reigneth forever and ever. Amen.

SUPPLICATION AND RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR

O Eternal Father, after having thanked thy infinite bounty for thy exceeding benefits in the past, we humbly implore pardon for our manifold sins and negligences, for the time we have consumed and wasted in vanities and in things that profit not unto salvation, and for the woeful want of correspondence with Thy graces which we have so habitually manifested.

But filled with confidence in Thy mercy, so lavishly displayed in a multitude of ways, we ask Thy blessings upon our good purposes and resolutions. For now we renew the sacred promises we made in Baptism, when we first became Thy children and heirs of the heavenly kingdom, and we renounce Satan with all his works and pomps.

Firmly convinced that the salvation of our immortal souls is the one great business of life, the purpose for which we have come into the world, we solemnly resolve for the future not only to do all in our power to avoid every grievous sin in thought, word, and deed but also to shun every unnecessary occasion that might imperil our souls. We further resolve to fulfill with greater exactness and fidelity the duties of our station in life, to give more attention to our progress in things spiritual, to be more devoted to holy Mass, to receive the Sacraments more frequently, and to pray more often and more fervently.

Bless, O my God, these good resolutions which we offer to Thee at this, the threshold of a new year. Give us Thy precious grace and make us truly wise. The days and years of our life are passing so swiftly away. Help us, in Thy mercy, to utilize them, as we ought to do, for Thy greater honor and glory, for the good of our neighbor, and for our sanctification. The night cometh in which no man can work longer; soon, at best, we shall have to appear before Thee to render an account of our stewardship. May we then be found worthy to receive from Thee that divine welcome: “Well done, good and faithful servants, enter into the joy of thy Lord.”

HYMN OF THANKSGIVING

(From the Te Deum)

Holy God, we praise Thy name!

Lord of all, we bow before Thee!

All on earth Thy scepter claim,

All in heav’n above adore Thee:

Infinite Thy vast domain,

Everlasting is Thy reign.

Hark! The loud celestial hymn,

Angel choirs above are raising!

Cherubim and seraphim,

In unceasing chorus praising,

Fill the heavens with sweet accord;

Holy, holy, holy Lord.

Holy father, holy Son,

Holy Spirit, three we name Thee,

While in essence only one,

Undivided God we claim Thee;

And adoring bend the knee,

While we own the mystery.

V. Let us bless the Father and the Son with the Holy Ghost.

R. Let us praise and exalt Him above all forever.

Let us Pray

O God, Whose mercy is without measure and the treasure of Whose goodness is infinite, we give thanks to Thy most comforting Majesty for the gifts conferred upon us, and we beg Thee continually through Thy clemency, that Thou Who grantest the request of those who ask Thee, mayest not abandon them now but rather dispose them for future rewards. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

OLD YEAR AND NEW YEAR

(From Lapsus est Annus)

A year is dead, a year is born;

Thus time flies by on silent wing:

Thou, Lord, alone canst guide our course

And safe to heaven Thy people bring.

For all past gifts we render thanks;

For graces new we humbly pray.

Oh, grant that we and those we love

May ne’er from faith and duty stray.

O Lord, our daily wants supply;

Protect from sickness and disease;

And deign to give, O God of love

The blessings of unbroken peace.

Oh, blot out all our ancient sins

And give us strength to fall no more;

When fight is o’er and victory won,

Then crown us on the eternal shore.

For all the old year’s sins we grieve;

Our hearts we consecrate to Thee.

Grant us, when all our years are sped,

Our heavenly father’s face to see.

PRAYER FOR A BLESSING ON THE NEW YEAR

O sacred and adorable Trinity, hear our prayers on behalf of our holy Father the Pope, our Bishops, our clergy, and for all that are in authority over us. Bless, we beseech Thee, during the coming year, the whole Catholic Church; convert heretics and unbelievers; soften the hearts of sinners so that they may return to Thy friendship; give prosperity to our country and peace among the nations of the world; pour down Thy blessings upon our friends, relatives, and acquaintances, and upon our enemies, if we have any; assist the poor and the sick; have pity on the souls of those whom this year has taken from us; and do Thou be merciful to those who during the coming year will be summoned before Thy judgment seat. May all our actions be preceded by Thy inspirations and carried on by Thy assistance, so that all our prayers and works, having been begun in Thee, may likewise be ended through Thee. Amen.

THE SHORTNESS OF LIFE

(Psalm LXXXIX)

Lord, Thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation. Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed; from eternity to eternity Thou art God. Thou makest man to return to atoms, and sayest, return, ye children of men. For a thousand years in Thy sight are as yesterday when it is past,And as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them (men) away as with a flood; they are as a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which growth up. In the morning it flourisheth and growth up; in the evening it fadeth, growth dry, and withereth. For in Thin anger we are consumed, and in Thy wrath we are troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before Thine eyes, our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance. For all our days are past away in Thy wrath; our years are consumed as a sigh. The days of our years are threescore and ten; and if in the strong they are fourscore years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; for it is soon past, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of Thine anger, and Thy wrath according to the fear that is due Thee? So teach us to number our days, that we may have a heart of wisdom. Return, O’Lord, how long? And be entreated in favor of Thy servants. O satisfy us in the morning with Thy loving-kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad according to the days in which we have been afflicted and their years wherein we have seen evil. Look upon Thy servants and upon their works, and direct their children. And the gracious kindness of the Lord Our God be upon us, and direct Thou the works of our hands upon us; Yea, the work of our hands, do Thou direct.

THE EVENING OF LIFE

(From the Rerum Deus)

O Strength, and stay upholden all creation,

who ever dost Thyself unmoved abide,

yet day by day the light in due gradation

from hour to hour through its changes guide:

Grant to life’s day a calm, unclouded ending,

and eve, untouched by shadows of decay,

the brightness of a holy death-bed blending

with dawning glories of th’ eternal day.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiven,

And Thou, O Christ, the co-eternal Word,

Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living

Now and to endless ages art adored.

Thoughts on how to end the evil

As I was laying with a sick child last night I was thinking about what a sad sorrowful time for so many families this year, being the same month of the Newton Massacre and to think of those families that children were completely massacred by man's will.  How sad Christmas time must of been in their homes, presents not brought out, stockings not filled songs not sung, Our Lords birthday not joyous becasue of man's will.

I had also heard the horrible news of a man ending his like just a few days before Christmas and I'm stunned that a man not only a father would end his life right before Christmas, again man's will.  His poor children and his poor mother, his poor family they must be so distraught right now.

What can we do?  Well as I sat up last night I thought about the intense prayer that these families so need right now.  Its so much different when you lose a person to an illness, an accident, a long suffering disease, and you watch your loved ones fight for their life, but when you lose someone to a death of man's will there is not much comfort.  It doesn't make any sort of sence.  It hurts so badly, and you are left feeling completely helpless.  When your loved one dies of an illness and you are with them and you are praying with them and you are holding them and you are telling them  how much they are loved, you have a role and in time and sometimes it takes a long time, you realize that it was there time, that you did what you could for them.  But in these instances of death by man's will we don't have that comfort.  We know it was not thier time.  We know it was a travesty, it was done at the hand of a man, not at our Creator that knows all.

Thou Shalt Not Kill.  Do we not understand that, this was not a suggestion for life, it was a Commandment, do we not teach our young what the meaning of a Commandment is?  Are we not teaching our young little ones?  Yes we know God is not welcome in schools, and its a problem.  Morality is not taught, it must be taught at home.  We must start early, God sent his only son to be born in a Stable that's how much he loves us...Hark the Hearald Angel Sing, Glory to the Newborn King.

We must teach our children to KNOW, LOVE, and SERVE GOD!.  Hark the Herald Angel Sing, Glory to the Newborn King.  Do our children know God, do they know his goodness, his creation, and in turn we are raised respecting his creation including life?  Do we teach our children to love God, love his commandments, love the life he has given us so much that we live a good life in order to be pleasing to Him?  Do we teach our children to serve God, to live in their state of life, to be charitable, prayerful and responsible to our family and our faith?  And in turn that will bring them much happiness in their lives?

Or are we parents that teach to know man, love man and serve man.  If we break it down, ok, we can love ourselves knowing we are smart creatures, that we can attain worldly goods and money and prestige, we can know that we can do it all and we can serve all those selfish inclinations that we possess.  We curb our inclinations or we can let them go wild, we can be moral beings or immoral beings, we can teach good or we can teach evil  But if we serve man we are not living the way God intended us to.  And we are not raising our children the way God intended us to.

We teach the young how to live, so we must get back to basics.  There is much to much violence on the news, much to much sorrow, much to much man's will crimes.  This recent tragedy isn't an excuse for politicians to take away our liberties, to take away our rights or our freedoms as they commonly do after a tragedy this is a wake up call to all of us, that we need to protect ourselves, our children, we need to teach the young, we need God.  We need God for the young people, for them to be raised knowing right from wrong, knowing the Commandments, knowing how to know God, to love God and to serve God and that is where true happiness is, it can't be bought and it can't be found, and sadly these man's will killings prove that.

Did you know that Christmas is NOT over? That the Christmas season just started yesterday, and we should keep the spirit of Christmas alive in our homes and our hearts for the 12 days of Christmas, this is a fabulous time for prayer, acceptance, doing things for others, and teaching our children what Christmas is really about.

Christmas Program

My Great Aunt Betty

Just found out that my great Aunt Betty died last February.  She lived in Pennsylvania.  She was a beautiful woaman, a nurse, husband died many years ago and son Bobby took over running of the family funeral home.  My Aunt Betty had a daughter named Ann with severe cerebal palsy and devoted her life in caring for Ann.  In fact a few years ago when she just couldn't do the day to day care, she put Ann into a assisted living home and put herself in the same living assisted home down the hall, so daily she would go and take care of Ann.

The family has said Ann has helped them deal with the heavy loss, I tell you sometimes I think people like Ann have a direct line to God himself, in accepting God's will, her understanding of life, faith her major handicap, has always been so amazing.  Her body is mangled, pretzeled but her mind and heart are as true as any devout person I've ever known.

Aunt Betty was the last of my grandmothers siblings to die, with only my grandma before her.  My grandmother lived more years than any of her siblings.  Aunt Betty has nine siblings with two infant death siblings--just realized we have the same number of children as my great grandparents did!  Wow, always thought boy grandma came from a large family!  haha.

My Aunt Betty took my dad and his brother in as teen agers for a time, and she was always very important to my dad, infact my twin sister was named after her.  She enjoyed my family, my children, liked Steve and was a very firm and loving woman.  I pay tribute to her and pray for her, may perfetual light shine upon her, and may she rest in peace.  Elizabeth Ann Mulcahy » Obituaries » The Tribune Democrat, Johnstown, PA

I'm back...

Well my absence has been a whirlwind, since our trip in November, times have been very busy.  We had all sorts of things to get done in December.  Keeping up with Carolyn's two nights a week college classes, Jaclyn's one night a week physical therapy, then we had play practice for Jaclyn, Joe and Carolyn once a week, choir practice 2-3 times a week, tumbling class once a week, threw in a few practices for little ones Christmas pagent and the ordination of Fr. Borja with friends visiting, and the recital, programs, pagent, ordination and play performance I've been one busy mama....and on top of it alll.....

I had to start my Christmas shopping and the morning sickness hit, and yes I said morning sickness....so yes we have a little one growing within.  So far as seems well, healthy heartbeat, always on the edge and a bit nervous but in all things God's will be done...but we are all very excited...
This is a very early few at only 6 weeks along, heart beat at 153 bpm.

Now lets talk Christmas shopping, what a royal pain in the rear end!  I didn't shop on Black Friday as I normally do since we were on vacation and figured, ah, no biggie bad economy they'll be sales everywhere....well did not take into consideration how much higher the prices were from last year to this year!  Talk about being annoyed in the store!

Very blessed a friend from Michigan sent some clothes, three really nice blouses for the girls.  Evelyn had a nice dress we've been saving and Rosie has one but Madelyn didn't.  I looked high and low to finally find a dress at the thrift store, take it apart and re-sew it together.  I just finished making headband flowery veils for the three young girls to wear on Christmas (midnight Mass)
Cookies are made thanks to Katelyn, Kix candy, Fudge and Peanut Brittle is made now, thanks largely in part to Carolyn with a little help from Mom.  Trimmed up the little boy's hair today.
Christmas Tree was a breeze to put up, the kids did great, we had some nice ornaments to add this year, the kids had a lot of fun, we put the tree up on the 3rd Sunday of Advent to celebrate the Joy Sunday.  The cat has been kind of a pain, but not as bad as we expected.  Tony loves the tree and never touches it!  He's a wonderful little boy.

you'll never guess...

So what do you think Jaclyn and Carolyn learned how to do in school today?  Come on, you have to guess...lets see Catholic highschool, taught today by the Bishop, now what could he possibly teach my daughters to do?  hmmmm, are you done trying.....hows this for a lesson today....

They cut up a deer!  Yep, sure did, I got to the school and they were working in the kitchen cutting up a deer, sure didn't think I'd ever see anything like that...

More Christmas Prep

So a few things going on, only a few!  haha.  Anyway so practice for the younger kids dance recital (Evelyn, Madelyn, Michael and Rose), Highschool choir events, Jaclyn's play will be done again on Wednesday for the ordinations, the little ones Christmas Pagent (Maddie being narrator, Mikey being St. Joseph, Tony being Mary's donkey, and Rosie an angel) and school program all coming up within the next 2 weeks.

The pagent idea is pretty neat.  The little ones are dressed in costumes, they get to stand on stage, the parents tell them where to stand, they don't have lines but they learn two songs, an older child (Madelyn and her classmate) read the story while the little ones just look adorable on stage.  Thanks to Anna Kuck for bringing this idea in.  It takes parent involvent but it seems like its going to be really cute.  Wish we had family around to see it, but I'll video it for sure!

Saint Nicholas

The children's shoes are lined up, little treats have arrived, an orange, a candycane, chocolate gold coins to celebrate the Great St. Nick!  Here's a little tidbit I found online in description of the day:

News, Holiday GuideSt. Nicholas' Feast Day is Dec. 6—How Do You Celebrate?

Many will put out their shoes or stockings Dec. 5 in hopes that St. Nicholas will leave them a little something for his Dec. 6 feast day. Read about the tradition.

Who was St. Nick?

He was born in 280 AD in Asia Minor. His parents died when he was young, leaving him great wealth. The saint was known for doing good deeds and sharing his wealth, such as anonymously delivering sacks of gold to those in need in the dark of night. He is recognized as a saint in many Catholic and Christian churches.

The American Santa Claus, or Old Saint Nick, was derived from the actual St. Nicholas.

How to celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas

The day is celebrated widely in some countries.

In Germany, children put out boots, or Nikolaus-Stiefel, outside on the eve of the Feast Day, in hopes that the saint will leave them treats or goodies.

In the Alsace region of France, for example, a little donkey carries baskets of goodies for children through towns and villages. Special treats are baked and shared, including gingerbread biscuits and a brioche shaped like the saint.

In Italy, a San Nicola festival commemorates the arrival of St. Nicholas' remains in the town of Bari in 1087. It is a day of festivals and gift giving. Also, because he is the patron saint of women wishing to be married, some young women leave notes and coins for the saint in the basillica there.

Many American families celebrate a version of this day, too. Some follow their nationality's traditions. Others simply set out a shoe or a sock for the saint to fill on the eve, so the next morning their children awake to find small gifts and treats. (This writer's family sometimes got oranges, symbolizing the bags of gold coins St. Nicholas would give away.)
