Anne's thoughts on Christmas and Tipping.

I know that we are all busy, broke, and eating well..Most of us anyway. Little things that we would normally do tend to go by the wayside this time of year. We are all stretched and doing what we can to make the dollar go further. We might go out to dinner while we are shopping, and that thought just may run through your head about leaving a smaller tip. Things are tight, right? But, if you cannot afford to leave the usual tip, should you really be eating out?
I am really big on this. Tip your trash man right before Christmas. Tip the milk man. Tip the people who every day/week lend their services to us. Yes, they already get paid and we pay for their services. But, do you really think they earn a great wage? Most of them do not. Throughout the year, I have had the kids run out to the trash man just to give him a couple of dollars to get a hot coffee or cocoa. He really appreciates it. With Christmas coming, it might be a few more dollars, but it helps. He does a good job, and if forget to bring our bin to the bottom of the driveway, he will get out of the truck and do it for us.
A CEO of a company that my husband works for had never heard of doing this. Last year, at the Christmas party, we were discussing this. He asked how much he should tip..I say, each according to their abilities. If you can only do a few dollars, fine. If you can do more, do.
When Don was working as the milk man, delivering milk at all hours of the night, come rain, snow, cold, sprained ankles, sore muscles, he got the milk there. He worked very hard..You are running for many hours straight, and sometimes, you have to deal with bad customers. But, come Christmas, every man on the milk run loved their jobs. It was the one time of year they looked forward to doing their jobs because they knew there would be fudge, a card, cookies, wine, beer or just cash waiting for them at many of the houses.
So, if you cannot do cash, stick a few homemade cookies out there. Do what you can, and say Thank You!

This is Anne, signing off. (and jumping off the soap box now)
